June's Art Reproduction Oil Painting

Sir Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641)  and his painting Charles I, King of England from Three Angles is our art reproduction of the month.

Anthony Van Dyck (1599 - 1641) was a Flemish Baroque Artist who became the leading court painter at the court of Charles I of England. Unsurprisingly therefore he is most renowned for his portraits of King Charles I and his family. (Altogether van Dyck has been estimated to have painted forty portraits of King Charles I).  Charles I was a passionate art collector and saw art as a way of promoting his grandiose view of the monarchy. As you can see from the reproduction oil painting of Van Dyck's Charles I from Three Angles, van Dyck painted many portraits of men, notably Charles I and himself, with the short, pointed beards then in fashion; consequently this particular kind of beard was much later (probably first in America in the 19th century) named as a vandyke. May's Art Reproduction

Francisco Goya and his painting The Second of May 1808 (also known as The Charge of the Mamelukes) is our art reproduction of the month. The Charge of the Mamelukes portrays when Napoleon used the pretext of reinforcing his army in Portugal to seize the Spanish throne. This attempt by the French to remove members of the Spanish royal family from Madrid provoked a widespread rebellion. In Goya's painting the French Imperial guard are ordered to charge and subdue the rioting citizens. The crowd sees the Mamelukes as Moors, provoking an angry response. Instead of dispersing, the crowd turned on the charging Mamelukes, resulting in a ferocious melee. Goya chose not to paint any single action or to have any single focal point. His dramatically chaotic scene evokes realism or actuality.

April's Art Reproduction

Thomas Eakins (1844 - 1916), one of the greatest American artists of the nineteenth century with his painting Max Schmitt in a Single Scull is our artist and art reproduction of the month. As you can see from this painting, Eakins instilled a powerful and shocking sense of realism into his paintings. He was drawn above all, to the idea of rowing scenes and produced several pieces of art on this theme, this one, Max Schmitt in a Single Scull is probably the most famous out of all of them.  It shows a friend of his, Max Schmitt (1843 - 1900) turning around to face the viewer. Schmitt had recently won a single-scull race and Eakins has included a number of references to his victory in the painting. As Eakins was also a rowing enthusiast he decided to add his own portrait to the picture, in the guise of the middle rower, which can just be seen in the distance.

March's Art Reproduction

Edouard Manet (1832-83) and his very famous oil painting, 'A Bar at the Folies-Bergere' is our artist and art reproduction of the month. Manet's favourite subject matter was the celebration of Parisian life and the Foiles-Bergere was the most famous of the cafe-concert halls, which provided entertainment as well as refreshment. An example of this entertainment can be seen, if you look closely at the top left part of the painting, where you can just about see the legs of a trapeze artist! Manet also gives prominence to the electric lighting in the cafe, which was still a novelty at this time. Unfortunately, Manet was terminally ill when he painted this wonderful and well-known masterpiece and did not paint this painting in the Folies-Berger itself but rather his studio where he had an imitation bar installed. Regarding the background of the painting, Manet had to work from memory, which shows a hazy reflection of the glamorous world he was leaving behind.

February's Art Reproduction

Kitty Lange Kielland's (1843 - 1914) Summer Night is our artist and art reproduction of the month. Kitty became a part of an important group of Norwegian Realist artists working in Munich and Summer Night is definitely one of her most evocative paintings. This beautiful oil painting has a romantic quality and exudes tranquility and reflection, with the waters dotted with water lilies and glowing with the light of early evening. Summer Night appears almost photographic in it's clarity, but is also infused with an atmosphere of nostalgia.

January's Art reproduction

Gustav Klimt's Mother and Child is our art reproduction and artist of the month.  Klimt (1862 - 1918) was a fantastic Austrian artist. He was influenced by Margaret Macdonald, Charles Rennie Mackintosh's wife, whose linear style included the use of semiprecious gems.  Mother and Child is a detail of The Three Ages of Woman, c.1905. The warm and harmonious colours exude serenity exquisitely portraying love in the purest of forms.

December's Art Reproduction

Monarch of the Glen by Sir Edwin Henry Landseer (1802- 1873) is our artist and reproduction oil painting of the month. Landseer was the greatest animal painter of his age.The popularity of stag paintings was linked to the changing image of the Scottish Highlands, which had been made fashionable thanks to novels by Sir Walter Scott and the patronage of Queen Victoria.  Monarch of the Glenn was originally commissioned for the refreshment room of the House of Lords but was deemed to be too expensive by the Commons so had to be sold privately.

November's Art Reproduction

November's artist of the month is Jewish Italian artist, Amedeo Modigliani (1884 - 1920).  Modigliani briefly attended art classes at the Free School of Nude Studies in Florence. He also was introduced to sculptor Brancusi who remained an important artistic inspiration. By 1917 a solo exhibition was organised in Paris.  However his nudes provoked a scandal that led to the closure of the show by the Parisian police only a few hours after its opening. We like the painting below, Seated Nude.

October's Art Reproduction

October's artist of the month is none other than Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c.1525 - 1569) and his painting The Peasant Wedding. Bruegel was known primarily as a painter of comic peasant scenes; in fact he used his peasant subjects as vehicles for moral allegories. According to some accounts, Bruegel liked to visit country weddings, disguised as a peasant, so that he could observe the festivities at first hand. However, in this painting the question remains, where is the groom? The bride is easily identified, sitting in the place of honour, but the location of her husband is far less certain. One possible suggestion is the man in the foreground turning around to call for more drink. He has been suggested because of a theory that the woman is marrying a townsman, which is also supported by the presence of a few well-heeled, urban guests. The venue is furnished like a parady of a great man's hall, with a blanket serving as a makeshift tapestry. Ironically, the most distinguished looking guest, the man on the far right is seated on a upturned tub.

September's Art Reproduction

September's artist of the month is Laurits Anderson Ring (1854-1933) and his beautiful oil painting called At Breakfast. This masterpiece captures the feeling of a leisurely breakfast spent in a cozy room flooded with morning light.  It also reflects a major preoccupation of artists around the turn of the century, the balance between depicting something in a naturalistic way and conveying a deeper kind of truth. Ring, a major Danish painter, is known as a Realist and Symbolist. This painting is a convincing portrayal of a woman at breakfast, but painted in a way that fills it with moody immediacy, giving it a more powerful kind of realism.  The overall effect of the painting is of a private moment snapped in passing but one where the viewer recognizes and feels the mood of the moment intensely.

August's Art Reproduction

Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863 -1923) a fantastic Spanish Impressionist painter is our artist of the month. Sorolla gained international recognition as the foremost artist of Mediterranean light and the sensation of movement. Sorolla painted portraits and everyday subjects, but his brightest and most luscious masterpieces were his beach paintings. He was fascinated by the blinding sunlight of his native Valencia, which is reflected in his spontaneous and daring perspectives. Las Tres Velsa is a perfect example.

July's Art Reproduction

Franz Marc's Blue Horse II is July's art reproduction of the month. In 1903, Franz Marc (1880-1916) saw paintings by Gauguin and Van Gogh in Paris; their use of colour to describe something other than material reality prompted the development of his own colour theories. Believing that animals are purer than humans, Marc thought that the animalization of art could could evoke the sense of God in everything. Blue Horse II shows a blue horse looking across a multicoloured landscape; viewers are invited to see the landscape through the horse's sensibility. "Blue is the male principle, astringent and spiritual", he wrote.  The predominant colour is yellow, however, which for Marc symbolized joy and the female element.

June's Art Reproduction

Alfred Sisley (1839-99) is our artist of the month with his beautiful painting, The Moret Bridge in the Sun. After meeting Monet and Renoir in the 1860s he became associated with the impressionist group, although he was always a relatively marginal, private personality. Monet had an enduring impact upon Sisley's landscape art, but his work also reflects the influence of Corot. Sisley painted the bridge at Moret on a number of occassions.  This work painted in 1892, is solidly structured in contrasting areas of water, buildings and sky, with reflections fastening the town and river together. As in almost all of Sisley's work, human figures are few and small. This is a townscape that aspires to the calm solitude of landscape. With no device to lead the viewer's eye into the picture, the gaze is free to roam over the sundrenched medieval walls and soft luminous sky. The gentle, charming, seductive quality of Sisley's painting can easily lead to its being underrated.

Odilon Redon's is May's Artist of the Month with his painting The Birth of Venus Odilon Redon (1840 - 1916) was a visual artist associated with the Symbolist movement. The Symbloists were searching for ways to escape their contemporary industralized world through art.  Redon developed an unprecedented style, constantly transforming natural landscapes into somber visions and odd fantasies. In The Birth of Venus, he offers his own interpretation of a classic myth. Venus is painted in a very unusual manner, emphasizing the contours of her silhouette, as if she had been drawn in a cave. The background is surreal, it is not clear where Venus is, she could be in the skies or in a shell under the sea. Redon leaves it to the viewer's imagination.

April's Art Reproduction

April's Artist of the Month is Jean-Francois Millet (1814-75) and his most influential painting, The Sower. The Sower was produced at a time when the Realist style of painting was causing ripples through the art world. Paintings of peasant life had been popular for centuries, but Millet's versions of the theme were radically different. In the past, scenes of rustic life had usually been small and picturesque. Designed for the town-dweller, they presented a quaint and unthreatening view of the countryside. In contrast, Millet's peasants were large and unidealized. They shocked the critics, because they were produced on a heroic scale that was normally reserved for classical deities. The Sower was greeted enthusiastically by republican and socialist critics, but drew a far more negative response from conservatives.

March's Art Reproduction

In the 1880s the lower-middle classes flocked to the Grande Jatte in Paris for a riverside stroll and a picnic on Sunday afternoons.  Georges Seurat worked on A Sunday on La Grande Jatte for two years, Seurat was also developing the pointilliste technique of applying colour in dots that were intended to fuse when seen from a distance and it coexists here with his more conventional earlier style. Some forty figures crowd the canvas, mostly in profile or full face. They appear static and frozen in an uncommunicative proximity. Many figures have been identified as known Parisian sterotypes. For example, the woman standing in the right foreground, with the striking bustle, is identified by her pet monkey - symbol of lasciviousness - as a woman with loose morals. Seurat said that his aim was to represent modern life in the style of a classical Greek frieze.

Max Liebermann (1847 - 1935) once considered a highly controversial artist and also one of the most important artists of his time is our artist of the month with his painting - Reiter am Strand nach Link. Born into a rich Jewish family, at a time when Jews were oppressed in Germany, Liebermann was a young adult when the laws were finally changed and Jews were granted the same rights as other German citizens. His realist paintings depicted working people as they actually were, not idealized and were seen as subversive. As an enthusiastic rider himself, motifs of horse riding start to reoccur in his art from the beginning of the 1900s. His impressionistic style captures the restlessness of the horse and the agitated movement of sea.

Hungarian painter, Jozsef Rippl-Ronai is January's artist of the month with his painting, Woman with a Birdcage. This painting is typical of the dark interiors he was painting at the time. The woman is bending slightly backward to balance the cage and its canary, which she is admiring. The curve of her back is in harmony with the curve at the back of the seat of the sofa behind her.  She is clearly a young and attractive woman yet she is dressed in a sombre brown.  The only bright patches are her hands and face, the cage and its contents.

Naive artist, Henri Rousseau's Tiger in a Tropical Storm is our art reproduction of the month. Rousseau's primitive style of art is instantly recognisable, yet in his time and for some years after his death, the artist was repeatedly ridiculed and his work was often deemed childish. Tiger in a Tropical Storm is the first of the series of jungle scenes that Rousseau painted, he claimed he got inspiration whilst serving in Mexico in 1860, although in truth, he had never left France. He therefore probably got his inspiration from the botanical gardens in Paris. Although critics of the period dismissed his work, he was much admired by his fellow artists including Matisse and Picasso.

November's Art Reproduction

Francis Baurrad with his most famous painting that we all know and love - His Master's Voice is November's art reproduction of the month.  The dog in the painting, Nipper so named because he had a tendency to  nip the backs of visitors legs was actually a stray before the Baurrad brothers took him in.  Nipper discovered the phonograph (a cylinder recording and playing machine) and Francis Barraud often noticed how puzzled he was to make out where the voice came from. This scene must have been indelibly printed in Barraud's brain, for it was three years after Nipper died (in September 1895) that he committed it to canvas.

October's Art Reproduction

Van Gogh with his final painting entitled: Wheat Field with Crows is our art reproduction of the month. It was painted in July 1890 just before his suicide.  According to some reports, it is actually the same field where the artist shot himself.  Elements of the natural world, which he had so often celebrated joyously in his art, have now taken on a threatening tone. The overripe corn does not sway gently, the darkened sky looks threatening and huge black crows advance towards the viewer. The spectator, like the artist feels hemmed in.Van Gogh applied his paint very thickly, making no attempt to smooth out the surface or blend his colours.  This is what gives his paintings such a sense of vibrant energy.

David Cox was one of the leading English landscape artists of the nineteenth century.  Crossing the Sands is a highly evocative and atmospheric work depicting travelers crossing open flat landscapes in windy weather.  There is a great sense of hope, as the travelers, who appear weary, leave the dark skies behind them and head toward the light.

Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880 -1938) is our artist of the month.  In this painting, entitled Berlin Street Scene, prostitutes strut through the street, but are hemmed in by the men on the right and the traffic on the left.  The man on the right gazes into a shop window, drawing a parallel between the objects for sale in the shop, and the woman for sale on his right.  This painting used to hang in the Brucke Museum in Berlin, but the German government returned the work to the heirs of its original Jewish owners in 2006.
